Platinum-topped gold was an innovation that allowed diamonds to be set in white metal that enhanced their brilliance, while retaining a non-irritating goa ld underside that sits softly against the skin. Toward the beginning to the 20th century, French jewelers such as Cartier found that using exclusively platinum in their jewels allowed them to refine mounts even further toward delicacy and greater invisibility.
