Dating from circa 1915, this 18K gold and platinum brooch set with a black opal and Montana sapphires by Tiffany & Co. was designed and created under the direction of Louis Tiffany. It is set with an oval black opal cabochon flanked by clusters of Montana sapphires and framed by scrolling platinum wirework accented by gold spherules. With its rich palette of blues and greens, mounted in a graceful, minimalist frame of attenuated wire, this small and precious brooch conveys the aesthetic of Louis Tiffany as well as the sense of the artisan's skilled hand.

When Louis Tiffany became Art Director of his family's firm in 1907, he relocated his jewelry department from Tiffany Furnaces at 23rd Street to the sixth floor of the Fifth Avenue store, an impressive Stanford White design modeled on the Venetian Palazzo Grimani. As with his glass, he selected women for positions of trust and importance, including running the department. Julia Munson and Meta Overbeck served as successive departments heads, while a variety of artisans were active as jewelers, women as well as men, including both immigrants and New Yorkers.
