Dating from circa 1900, this English five-stone opal and diamond ring is set in 18K gold. The ring is set with five slightly graduating precious opals interspersed with eight rose-cut diamonds, with scrolling gallery and carved foliate shoulders. With its flashing opals set off by sparkling diamonds, this classic five stone ring pairs nicely with other gem set bands, and holds it own on any finger you like.

Opals have been popular since antiquity. In Ancient Rome, they were prized highly for their rainbow colors and mysterious phenomena as representing the full spectrum precious gems in one stone. Though the historic source of opals in Europe was Hungary, they were extremely rare in the Roman world, and historians are unsure of their ancient source.
