Émile Gallé "Aralia Japonais" Vitrine

Crafted by Émile Gallé, this wood-and-glass display vitrine is framed with naturalistic motifs of the Japanese paperplant (Fatsia japonica, formerly known as Aralia sieboldii). Four large, deeply lobed paperplant leaves ornament the sides, including one rendered in richly figured sapele veneer. The rear panel features a thriving paperplant shrub alongside Papilio xuthus, the Asian swallowtail butterfly native to East Asia. Together, these botanical and entomological elements illustrate Gallé’s deep fascination with East Asian flora and fauna, showcasing his talent for translating natural forms into structural and decorative furniture design. Supported by three tiers, the cabinet’s structure stands against a backdrop depicting the full paperplant motif. Its legs are modeled after the stalk of the umbellifer, a motif Gallé introduced to furniture design in 1894. Among his preferred species was La Berce des Prés (Giant Hogweed), a highly toxic plant capable of growing up to 18 feet tall as it spread across fields and along the riverbanks of Nancy. Possessing a dual nature both beautiful and poisonous, the Umbellifer family deeply inspired Art Nouveau artists as an embodiment of the femme fatale archetype; though technically weeds, these plants were revered and featured prominently across celebrated masterpieces of the era.
