Curator's Notes
Like many of the world's most fabled gem deposits, Burma ruby has long been valued in its native land and abroad. The stone has always had religious and cultural significance in Burma, its mines held for centuries under supervision of generations of its royals. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, Hugenot gem supplier to the court of Louis XIV, and best known for bringing the great blue diamond known as the Hope to Europe, recorded in his history that the Mughal emperors of the period prized Burma ruby. Tavernier's 1676 comments about the parabolic escalation of the gem's value per carat hold true in principle today: "A ruby of the weight of one carat, if it be perfect, is worth 20 florins; if it weighs two carats, it is worth 100 florins; if three carats, 450 florins; if four carats, 1,000 florins; but if it weighs five carats, and is perfect, it is sold for whatever is asked for it." Burma ruby is possibly uniquely rare in geologic terms. It formed over thousands of years, stopping and starting, in pockets of unstable mountain-building environments within the crust, and only where chromium, one of the rarest elements, is present, and where iron, one of the most abundant elements, is scarce.
