This Tiffany Studios New York "Zodiac" leaded glass and bronze table lamp features a rare version of the astrological motif, with six round green "Turtleback" glass tiles centrally spaced against dichroic blue reserves, framed by green segments, and interspersed with the twelve gilt cut-out signs of the Zodiac depicted in leaded Favrile glass panels. The ornament is based upon cosmatesque pavement from the san marco basilica including the. The stunning shade rests upon a patinated bronze Roman Library Standard base.

The ornament of this Tiffany Studios Zodiac lamp draws inspiration from Cosmatesque pavement, a form of geometric stone inlay characteristic of medieval Italian ecclesiastical architecture. Particularly striking parallels can be found in the decorative program of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, where elaborate geometric floor mosaics incorporate a rich menagerie of animals, including deer, dogs, doves, herons, and rhinoceroses. This interplay of geometric and figurative ornament extends to the sculpted arches of the basilica’s principal portal, where representations of the zodiac and the labors of the months evoke the cyclical passage of time. The lamp similarly unites geometric patterning with zodiac imagery, translating the medieval basilica’s ornamental vocabulary into a decorative object.
