Tiffany Studios New York "Linenfold" Table Lamp

A Tiffany Studios New York Favrile glass and patinated bronze "Linenfold" table lamp. The shade is comprised of twelve amber Favrile glass panels and sits atop a "Wave" bronze base with a warm brown patina given a Japonist touch by the gold highlighted waves at the top and bottom of the base. At the turn of the last century, Tiffany lamps were made available to a growing consumer class in Tiffany’s New York store and in his Tiffany Studios sales catalogues. He fashioned lamps in a wide range of colors and formats, presenting designers and consumers with numerous means to distribute light sources within an interior. His trompe-l’oeil “Favrile-fabrique”, or “Linenfold” reading lamps simulated silk or linen lamp in glass. The color palate he chose for this model softened and diffused the glare of electric light, to which people were still relatively unaccustomed in 1900, while offering a range of mood lighting. Circa 1920's.

Far more common in a smaller scale, the 20-inch diameter of this shade is remarkable in its dimensions alone. The effect of the Tiffany Studios “Linenfold” technique on this larger scale is exaggerated in a richly sumptuous way—the simple opulence of the folded glass complemented by the wonderful detailing in the top border and base of the lamp.
