Louis Comfort Tiffany for Tiffany & Co. Moonstone and Sapphire Pendant Necklace

$45,000
Designed and fully hand created by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his jewelry studio between approximately 1910 and 1920, this moonstone, sapphire and platinum pendant hangs from a later sapphire chain. The pendant is designed as an elongated teardrop form centering a flexibly-set oval cabochon moonstone with foliate engraved edges, within a shaped frame of circular-cut sapphires accented by scrolling wirework and beads, suspended from a later delicate double 18K white gold chain of spectacle-set circular-cut sapphires. A rare work from the studio of Tiffany & Co.'s foremost artist, this Louis Comfort Tiffany jewel transforms gemstones into ethereal, painterly compositions of texture, light and color.

Louis Comfort Tiffany's jewelry was fully crafted by hand, based on original design sketches. Over the life of the department under Louis' tenure, it was headed by women, and women occupied many essential roles, selected not only for their skills but what Louis considered their natural aptitudes - deft hands suited to intricate work and eyes that could perceive more shades of his preferred colors, blue and green. While many of Louis' designs looked to nature or historical forms for inspiration, these compositions of billowy blue-gray moonstones in soft, sloping shapes, contrasted with metallic blue, sparkling sapphires, set juxtaposed within minimalist platinum frames, are original and unmistakable as his work.
