Franz Hagenauer Pair of Nickel-Plated Jazz Band Sculptures

$125,000

This set of two Art Deco nickel-plated Jazz Band sculptures, comprised of an upright saxophone player and a seated drummer, is crafted by Austrian artist Franz Hagenauer. The architecturally postured musicians complement each other in their movements, which appear to be as rhythmic as the unheard tune they play. Expressive and yet reserved, the figures seem to embody a dedication to their art and to the creation of art that mimics the dedication and artistry of the master who engineered them. Sold exclusively as a matching set.

Franz Hagenauer studied from an early age with Franz Cižek at Vienna's School of Applied Arts, and joined his family business at age twenty. His interest and talent lay in sculpture with sheet metals rather than cast figures. A band of seven Jazz Band musicians by the same artist sold at Sotheby's in June 2011 (lot 81, New York, June 15, 2011).
