"Sentimental" motifs in jewelry were a favorite theme of the romantic and idealistic Victorian period. With motifs such as hearts, snakes, and buckles, period jewelers drew broadly on ancient and universal symbology to represent the gift of love, whether between spouses, lovers, parents and their children, or dear friends. This locket with its unusual infinity symbol is a hard to find example of this sentimental form.
