With platinum in great demand for the war effort, 1940s jewelers turned almost exclusively to gold. When creating jewels in colored 18K gold, the French often alloyed 24K gold with palladium, a platinum group metal with fewer industrial uses, or with a combination of iron and copper, to turn the gold whitish gray. In the U.S., nickel is often used to color gold a brighter white.
