So-called "Keeper" rings derive from 18th century models. These bands were originally worn in pairs secure a more valuable, gem-set ring and prevent it from slipping from a gloved hand. In the 19th century, when betrothal and wedding ring forms varied widely, these gold "keeper" rings were designed with an intertwined braid motif. Long popular, they were traditionally exchanged to commemorate betrothal.
