Cartier Gem-set and Diamond 18K Gold "Byzantine" Bangle Bracelet

$22,500
Created in 1994, this 18K gold, ruby, emerald, sapphire and diamond bangle bracelet is a jewel by Cartier. It is designed as a hinged bangle, its top set with an applied design centering a circular-cut ruby, six pear-shaped sapphires, and two square-cut emeralds, among round brilliant-cut diamonds. Heavy and soft, this sparkling and colorful bangle references the long homage that the firm made to the arts of India.

This bangle's gem-set top references the Indian bazuband, a tapering gem-set form designed to adorn the upper arm. Its origins lie in imperial Deccan and Mughal jewelry traditions. Cartier sold such antique Indian jewels in its Paris, London and New York salons in the 1930s, and their designers drew inspiration from handling them.
