Tiffany & Co. Opal, Malachite and Black Jade "Pansy" Brooch, Angela Cummings

$9,500
Dating from the early 1980s, this Tiffany & Co. "Pansy" brooch by Angela Cummings is composed of opal, malachite, mother-of-pearl, and 18K gold. It is designed as two contrasting pansy blossoms, alternately set with black opal and mother-of-pearl petals centering black jade accents, supported on stems with a malachite leaf. Crafted by extraordinary lapidaries, this charming abstract flower formed of gems with vivid, iridescent phenomena is easy to recognize as a classic Cummings design for Tiffany & Co.

Hired by Walter Hoving and Harry Platt, Angela Cummings started at Tiffany as Donald Claflin's assistant in 1967. As John Loring described her designs, in a menner very relevant to this precious yet streamlined flower, "her pieces were deceptively simple in appearance, but a deeper look indicated a complex thought process at work.... Her pieces were always fresh and she had a delicate sensibility in design that she was able to translate into durable materials." Cummings left Tiffany to establish her independent design studio in 1983.
