Its depth of color, rarity, and hardness have made sapphires among the most sought-after and highly celebrated stones in both modern and ancient history. The Sinhalese of Sri Lanka, where this particular stone originates, believed sapphires had talismanic properties. A sapphire stone was given by the Sinhalese people to the British explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton, who carried it with him until his death, and famously accredited much of his good fortune to the stone's supposed power.
