During and after World War II, Van Cleef & Arpels designers continued to explore one of their signature themes - the French art passementerie. However, always in tune with developments in modern art and society, they applied concepts of abstraction to their designs, reducing traditional motifs of scallopped and embroidered lace collars and necklines to pure line and volume. By reviving the use of gold, a material long neglected by luxury jewelers, Van Cleef & Arpels created striking and bold jewelry.
