Van Cleef & Arpels Lapis and Diamond Ring

Created in the mid-20th century by Van Cleef & Arpels, this ring is composed of lapis lazuli, diamonds and 18K gold. It centers a sinuous line of round brilliant-cut diamonds flanked by lapis lazuli shoulders carved in a pattern of curved steps, continuing into the gold shank. Whether worn alone or paired with other bands, this little vivid blue lapis ring with its chic and sculptured design makes an outsize impact on the finger.

Lapis Lazuli is a highly uncommon metamorphic rock that has been found only in Afghanistan, Russia and Chile, with the Afghan deposit producing the material most vividly colored and free from inclusions. In the Renaissance, lapis was highly sought after as a pigment by the artists of the era to create a rich and intense hue considered "the most perfect of all colors", and known as "Fra Angelico blue".
