Tiffany Studios New York Single "Stalactite" Pendant Favrile Glass Light Fixture

This Tiffany Studios New York single "Stalactite" drop pendant light fixture features an iridescent decor on its oblong, amber-hued Favrile glass shade. Hanging from a delicate crown of patinated bronze with a brass chain system, the closed shade is perfectly accented by the gold-pulled feather decorations that pull light simultaneously upward and downward through the shimmering design on the glass. The unique single-drop "Stalactite" suggests a light fixture that's minimal, but still makes quite a statement.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was fascinated by the stalactite form, and included similar shades in larger chandeliers, one of which hung in his own home. The stalactite form was actually inspired by an opposing form, the indentations of the "Muqarnas" that could be seen not only in the medieval mosques of Southern Spain, but also in Tiffany's own home at Laurelton Hall. Tiffany created the shade to complement the beautiful, oblong indentations of the “Muqarnas” after traveling in Northern Africa and Southern Spain.
