Tiffany Studios New York "Double Student Vine Border" Table Lamp
The highly intricate detailing on the body, stems and base of this arresting "Double Student" table lamp by Tiffany Studios New York are perfectly balanced by the refined patterning and stark coloration of the two shades that sit on either side of the central canister. Balance prevails throughout the composition, as the two shades, designed with a "Vine Border" decoration, and their narrow bases appear almost suspended in air alongside a central column, the "Oil Can" base, of patinated bronze.

The arabesque elements of the lamp are no doubt inspired by Louis Comfort Tiffany's great love of Northern Africa and Southern Spain, and their respective visual languages. He traveled to this region in the world after being inspired by Mark Twain's famed text Innocents Abroad. Tiffany not only integrated visual motifs from these regions into his lamps, he incorporated them into other mediums like oil painting and into the architectural layout of his home.
