In the 19th century, European diamond cutting was still an affair of handicraft, artisanship, and natural shape and weight preservation; the full physics of light had yet to be understood. Unlike modern cuts, which maximize brilliance (white light), antique cuts take advantage of diamond’s unmatched capacities for white light return, rainbow flashes, and scintillation by achieving a beautiful balance of the three.
