Michael Coffey "Lunar Sea II" Carved Wood and Agate Coffee Table

This Mozambique wood coffee table, by Michael Coffey, entitled "Lunar Sea II" features a beautiful agate stone, sourced from noted agate stone collector, Brenda Houston, and symbolizes the geolithic carving that takes place as great bodies of water move over stone over billions of years. Level areas allow the combination of a functional coffee table with a cool, contrasting accent of shining agate in the sea of warm wood. Coffey, a noted and notable figure in the world of emerging design, often looks to ancient mechanisms for inspiration on his most cutting edge designs.

Michael Coffey has consistently broken the boundaries of style and functionality in the decorative arts. Teaching himself theory and practice, he was influenced enormously by the examples made by the likes of Wendell Castle, Walker Reed, George Nakashima, Sam Maloof, and others. In 1978, Coffey first presented his Aphrodite rocking chair, a monumental oblong curved piece of wood which excited the market and solidified Coffey's reputation for creativity and skill.
