Jean Després Hammered Silver Bracelet

This French silver bracelet by the artist Jean Després dates from the Art Moderne period of the 1930s. It is composed of six hammered plaques alternately highlighted by high relief hemispheres within a raised circle and pairs of applied parallel bar topped with beads, all joined by arched hemi-cylinders. Stylish and sleek, expressing the streamlined aesthetic of the age, this silver bracelet with its shimmering hammered surface and rich patina is a signature piece of Després’ interwar work.

Jean Després jewelry benefits from the inherent contradictions that create an intriguing dynamic in his work. On one side, his jewelry was designed and fully hand-made in a small studio by the artist himself, while, on the other, the pieces celebrate the forms of the machine and machine-made. This bracelet embodies the captivating paradox of Després’ work as a modernist and a studio artist.
