Jean Després Futurist Ring
This silver and gold ring by the modernist jeweler Jean Després was designed and handmade by the artist himself in Paris during the 1940s. The rectangular top is composed with an abstract foliate device accented by applied gold beads, the polished forms set off by an all-over hand-hammered “martelé” surface, and flanked by irregularly stepped shoulders. With its intriguing asymmetry, interplay of luminosity and shadow, and clean minimalism, this artistic ring expresses the spirit of the French Art Moderne.
