Gold Joan of Arc Long Chain Medallion Necklace

This antique gold French chain, consisting of over five feet of gleaming hand-formed links, suspends a shaped medallion of Joan of Arc. Composed of navette-form links, each centering a radial design of twisted wirework and alternating with circular trace links, the chain’s beautifully-wrought medallion shows the medieval heroine as depicted by the artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Worn glamorously doubled or tripled, this opulent period chain and medallion discreetly celebrate the young woman’s heroism and spirituality.

French medallists were respected and highly specialized artists who spent their careers working in small relief in metals, including high karat gold. In this case, the depiction of Joan of Arc is derived from the Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres portrait of her at Reims Cathedral, where she celebrated the Coronation of Charles VII, the French monarch whom her charismatic leadership helped bring to power. The Ingres painting is in the collection of the Musée du Louvre.
