David Webb Ruby and Diamond Convertible Lariat Necklace/Bracelet

Created in the 1980s, this 18K gold David Webb necklace and bracelet of multiple conversions is set with approximately 110 carats of large cabochon rubies and 15 carats of diamonds. It is composed of tear-drop form ribbed and textured gold links each centering a cabochon ruby, alternating with lozenge-shaped diamond links, and suspending a larger conforming ruby pendant, transformable into long or short form, and further convertible into a long and short lariat. Each short form is accompanied by a bracelet. A glamorous necklace relating to Webb’s most opulent jewels for the galas and dance floors of the 1960s and 1970s, this luscious ruby necklace and bracelet of five creative forms will always remain novel, stylish and wonderful.

The lavish gold and sculptural volume of David Webb’s extravagant necklaces is often cleverly counteracted, as here, by a sense of space and airiness. Though he loved sumptuous combinations of gems, some of Webb’s famous necklace creations such as the “Summer Berries” of the early 1970s and his fringe necklace for Doris Duke used rubies “in excess” to deliver a powerful, single impression of vivid color.
