Claudius Linossier Dinanderie Vase

A rare French Art Deco ovoid-shaped vase by Claudius Linossier. This geometric vase is constructed with silver-domed brass heel and patinated fire decoration and silver inlays on a hammered burnt umber background. The geometric pattern used on this vase was termed the Tetrakis, ubiquitous across many artforms that Linossier was exposed to. The tetrakis formed the basis for the quilting pattern: "pinwheel", "windmill", and "broken dishes." Such quilting patterns were often adapted into Art deco textiles by Linossier's contemporaries.
The tetrakis pattern was also used in the popular French board game "Jeu du lièvre et du Chien" (hare and hounds) or "Jeu de Soldat" (soldier's game). The game was popular amongst soldiers from the Franco-Prussian war (1870) to World War I (1911).

The Art Deco master Claudius Linossier (1893-1953) is best known for his bold geometric metalware, executed in the Renaissance technique of dinanderie. Linossier meticulously hammered metal oxides into the surface of hand-raised copper vessels. When heated, the metal oxides produced subtle anthracites, umbers, and crimsons— evoking the hallowed mosaic floors of 16th-century churches.
