Charles Korschann Gilt Bronze Vase

This French Art Nouveau vase by Charles Korschann in gilt bronze features a diamond-shaped base that tapers to a narrow rounded top, where it intersects with swirling stems and flower buds in sculpted relief that form the handle. The composition of the handle is echoed on the base, meditating on themes of movement and abundance with overwhelming floral arrangements and a sprite female form, dancing through the golden vegetation with flowers in her romantically flowing hair.

The vase combines many common motifs from Symbolist and Art Nouveau design: bats, poppies, and seductive female forms—or "femmes fatales." Together, the pairing evokes a mysterious dream-state, suggested also in the identification of poppies, with opiates, and bats, with the night.
