Founded in 1906 in Paris, Van Cleef & Arpels is known for visionary artistry and meticulous craft. In the 1960s, they embraced semi-precious materials like coral to evoke the bohemian spirit of the times. The "pedeloque" earring popular in the 18th century French court featured a ribbon or bow between the two main components and was design to create visual balance for the towering coiffures of the day. Perhaps the designer considered these as excellent counterpoint to the 1960s teased hair up-do known as the beehive.
