Pioneered in the 1920s by the Suzanne Belperron and Jeanne Boivin among others, the clipback earring ruled in the 1930s and onward. A new innovation which allowed the gems to be concentrated close to the face by hugging the lobe and even climbing up the ear, this novel form of ear ornament created new design possibilities and beauty-enhancing looks.
