Tiffany Studios New York "Peony" Table Lamp
The shade of this Tiffany Studios New York "Peony" leaded glass table lamp is remarkable for a number of reasons, perhaps the most eye-catching being the explosively-colored red, pink and purple peony blooms. Equally of note, however, are the green leaves, made of Tiffany's signature mottled glass, giving them a wonderfully luxe texture against the blue and lavender background, made of the alluring Tiffany striated glass, which offers incredible dimensionality in the light it puts forth. The shade sits atop a decorated patinated bronze library base.

In Victorian times, peonies represented bashfulness, since mischievous nymphs were said to hide in their magnificent petals. With this in mind, it is easy to imagine how the Tiffany Studios New York designer responsible for such a fabulous interplay of color and glass was able to come up with such a playful and multifaceted design.
