John Rubel Ruby and Turquoise Perfume Bottle

Dating from the 1940s, this 14K gold perfume or scent bottle is set with rubies and turquoise. It is designed as a pear-shaped form inspired by Persian rosewater flasks, with stylized engraved blossom motifs highlighted by cabochon turquoise, the domed cap accented by round-cut rubies with incorporated applicator. Playful and diminutive, this precious little portable perfume slips easily into a handbag as a handy refresher of scent.

Rubel Frères was established in Paris by Hungarian immigrant brothers in 1915. Their superb work in the Art Deco style for Van Cleef & Arpels secured them an exclusive contract with that maison, and with the start of WWII in 1939, Rubel followed VC&A to New York. VC&A New York's original gem-set ballerinas of that period were produced for them by Rubel. This perfume dates form the brief time that Rubel set up on their own, at 777 Fifth Avenue, from 1943 to 1947, when the family felt able to return to France.
