Colombian emeralds have set the standard for emerald color; the unique geologic setting of their formation means that they tend to contain more color-enriching chromium, and less iron, than some other major deposits. Emeralds have been valued by South American peoples for thousands of years, but their trade went worldwide in the 16th century, when the gem-loving Mughal emperors began buying them up through trade with Spain.
