This impressive Daum Nancy vase features a wonderfully architectural wheel-carved oversized thistle bloom in the deepest hue of blue against a background of milky, opaque white background and lighter, sky blue, cloud-like mottled glass. While the background has a soft, atmospheric quality, the deeply-colored thistle bloom is in sharp, exquisite detail that delights the eye immediately.

Daum Nancy's art glass came to the forefront around 1891, when, inspired by Art Nouveau, pieces were often crafted combining multiple techniques, from cameo carving, enameling, acid etching, and more. The Daum Nancy artists developed techniques of incorporating colored glass into the surface of the molten vessel throughout the glassmaking process, which could then be shaped while hot, and carved or acid etched when cold, to produce stunning effects, such as the flower on this vase.
