Tiffany Studios New York "Laburnum" Table Lamp

A Tiffany Studios New York "Laburnum" table lamp. The brain child of famed Tiffany designer Clara Driscoll, the shade of this remarkable lamp features a sky blue ground barely visible behind the lush bouquet of spotted lemon yellow, canary yellow, kelly green and mauve colored floral buds framed by spear shaped leaves in mottled, olive green glass. The vegetal forms hang from earthen hued vines that twist along the upper reaches of the shade. Importantly, the shade terminates in an irregular, undulating border, one of its distinguishing characteristics and a rare characteristic for a Tiffany lampshade. The shade sits on a patinated bronze "Twisted Vine" base.

Although it is easy to celebrate the exciting particularities of each of Louis Comfort Tiffany's lamps, there is a true uniqueness to the "Laburnum" that should not be overlooked. This lamp is the only one in Tiffany's repertoire that was made with this exact shape; carefully executed to reflect the particular sumptuousness and subsequent heavy draping of the laburnum flower. Tiffany himself was a great lover of this flower, and cultivated them at Laurelton Hall. Its unique design is attributed to Clara Driscoll, the head of the Tiffany Studios Women's Glass Cutting Department.
