Created circa 1880, this antique crescent brooch is set with diamonds. It is designed as a crescent bead-set throughout with old mine-cut diamonds of varying size, mounted in silver-topped gold, with a pierced gallery. Beautifully shaped with a pleasing roundness and finesse, this crescent with its fiery diamonds against its dark patinated silver ground is a sparkling reference to the beauty of moonlight.

Crescent brooches became very popular in the late 1880s, and were worn as convertible jewels with two sets of findings -a single pinstem and double pronged pin - so that they could serve either as brooch or hair ornament worn "a la Diane". Another popular gem-set version of the motif was set with moonstones and diamonds.
