Jean Després Modernist Dôme Ring

$30,000

Dating from circa 1945, this Modernist “Dôme” ring by the Parisian artist Jean Després is composed of gold and silver. Designed as a hammered demi-sphere, the silver dome is accented by gold double arched motifs and broad curvilinear elements that serve as a frame, while the broad shank is highlighted by conforming motifs in silver and gold. The ring is an elemental statement of strong design, an exploration of geometry and volume by a modern French master.

In 1920s Paris, Jean Després associated with leading avant-garde artists, including the important Modernist artist Georges Braque, who played a key role in the development of Cubism. Després’ jewels explore geometry, fragmented surfaces, and reductivism, suggesting that he shared Braque’s belief that an artist experienced beauty "… in terms of volume, of line, of mass, of weight."
