French Retro Diamond Ring

Created in the 1940s, this French Retro 18K gold and platinum ring is set with approximately 1.20 carats of old mine-cut diamonds. The ring centers a larger cushion-shaped old mine-cut diamond, weighing approximately 0.65 carat, box-set in a square surround bordered by 8 old mine-cut diamond melee, and flanked by stepped ogee and raised arch shoulders, completed by a broad band. Echoing the streamlined forms of early 20th century machines and architecture, this sculptural Retro ring speaks to French style and modernity.

The short supply of precious stones in France during the wartime years of the 1940s caused older jewelry to be recycled, the stones unmounted and placed in new, contemporary settings. The juxtaposition of these 18th or early 19th century hand-cut diamonds with the handmade ring’s ultramodern look of industrial chic enhances the jewel’s intense charm.
