Appearing for the first time in the 1930s, large yet compact earrings secured by clip backs were an important innovation in jewelry history. As opposed to pendant styles, clip earrings allowed jewelry designers to explore totally new and different forms and motifs, leading them to novel ways to enhance the beauty of the wearer. The ultra-flattering sunburst form remained popular throughout the mid 20th-century.
