Bulgari Blue Enamel Striped Gold Compact
This gold and blue enamel striped compact by Bulgari Rome dates from the 1960s. It is designed as an oblong form with rounded edges, and is enhanced with tapering stripes of blue enamel interspersed with reeded gadroons, opening by a diamond-set thumbpiece to a mirrored, fluted interior. Its soft, curving controls, implied volume and playful surface make it both a beautiful and useful accessory for the purse.

Founder Satirios Bulgari was a master gold and silver smith, and his artistry in hollowware was informed by masterpieces he collected by Italian Renaissance and 18th century English craftsmen. In this tradition, the Bulgari family created a variety of objets d’art in gold and silver, including gold purses, compacts such as this one, and other precious accessories, in the expectation that the playful forms, volume and colors would encourage every day use.
