Chrysoprase is a scarce, translucent form of chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz. Its name derives from the Greek for "golden leek". Trace quantities of nickel silicate, nickel oxide, and free nickel ions dispersed within the chalcedony are believed to contribute to the luminous green color.
