Throughout history, rubies have been the rarest and most prized of gemstones. In the ancient world, as reflected in Proverbs, only wisdom was prized above rubies. The gem material mined in Burma has long been considered to set the standard for superlative red in ruby. Burmese rubies tend to be more free of iron impurities than those of other deposits, allowing them to exhibit a prized red fluorescence in sunlight that enhances the hue. In contrast to the other three traditional noble stones - diamond, sapphire, and emerald - Burma rubies only very rarely occur in sizes over 5.00 carats. An outstanding Burma ruby of ideal color and transparency above that size can command in the range of $1,000,000/carat.
