Nitrogen atom impurities play a vital, but opposite, role in colorless and fancy yellow diamonds. In fine colorless and near colorless diamonds, minimal numbers of nitrogen atoms entered the pure carbon tetrahedral structure, preserving maximum white light transmission, while in vivid yellow stones, a significant number of nitrogen substitutions appear in clusters or as well distributed single atoms, creating the ultra desirable hue.
