Lapis Lazuli is a highly uncommon metamorphic rock that has been found only in Afghanistan, Russia and Chile, with the Afghan deposit producing the material most vividly colored and free from inclusions. In the Renaissance, lapis was highly sought after as a pigment by the artists of the era to create a rich and intense hue considered "the most perfect of all colors", and known as "Fra Angelico blue".
