By 1963, David Webb had embraced the bold look of hand worked, volumized gold. Studying in the Ancient American, Egyptian, Greek & Roman galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Webb had become fascinated with the powerful, abstract motifs employed by ancient goldsmiths. Webb and his artisans could spend up to 100 hours polishing gold to achieve a surface patina and texture that expressed this inspiration in history and art. In their form and sculptural volume, these hoops are reminiscent of the Met’s Sumerian earrings of 2500 B.C., among the earliest gold ornaments in the museum.
