Bloomed Gold, Pearl and Diamond Locket Necklace with Snake Chain

This bloomed 18K gold, pearl and diamond locket necklace dates from the Victorian period. Suspended from a smooth, snake-link chain, the bloomed oval locket centers a split seed pearl and rose-cut diamond floral motif within a stylized leaf and applied bead surround, and opens to a double compartmented interior. This versatile necklace is both a beautiful pendant on a soft, streamlined chain, and a precious sentimental jewel to hold beloved images close to the heart.

Lockets evolved from ancient jewelry forms, including the "bullas" favored by the ancient Etruscans and Romans. Formed of gold, worn by men, women and pets alike, antique sculpture confirms that these talismanic pendants, containing perfumed or apotropaic substances, were worn singly or severally, strung at intervals along necklaces. In the 19th century, painted miniature portraits and early photographic images were commonly enclosed in lockets.
