Though it is clear from his kind portrayal of Mademoiselle Lender that the artist felt some affinity for her, it was made equally clear that the sentiments were not returned. The subject of this lithograph is quoted as saying of Toulouse-Lautrec, "What a horrible man! He is very fond of me, but as far as the portrait... you can have it!"
