Edmond Lachenal Glazed Ceramic Frog Tray

This glazed ceramic tray, by Edmond Lachenal, features a decoration of three sizeable frogs, hanging on to the sides of a lily pad, in light brown and green glazes. The expressive animals are caught by the French Art Nouveau artist in various stages of success in their summit of the lily pad, which itself appears to be curling inward, seemingly working against their beautiful struggle.

One of the tenants of the Art Nouveau movement was to express the beauty of nature in every stage of its existence, not just a flower in full blossom or a tree in bloom. Here, we see a lily pad that has clearly entered the end stages of its life, and yet, its beauty is undeniable.
