Tiffany Studios "Zodiac Damascene Harp" Desk Lamp

SOLD
$14,500

Dating from 1906-1920, this Tiffany studios desk lamp is composed of Damascene favrile glass and a gilt bronze Zodiac base. The green domed shade with golden brown accents exhibits a wave pattern, with subtle iridescent touches, and is suspended from a twist top that permits the light to be angled, all supported by harp form arms and a Zodiac base with figural medallions among scrolling motifs. This versatile little lamp offers soothing green illumination and an intriguing synthesis of undulating patterned glass and intricately carved ornament.

Literature: A similar lamp is pictured in: Tiffany Desk Sets, by William R. Holland, Atglen, PA: Schiffer, 2008, p. 44, fig. 1-66. Further, the Zodiac pattern is discussed in Louis C. Tiffany: The Collected Works of Robert Koch, pp. 214-216.

The Zodiac pattern appeared in the 1906 price book, and was one of the four early desk set patterns. As described in Tiffany’s period catalogues, this set was “very dignified and simple in character”, with “Zodiac Signs are carved in low relief on the Medallions formed by the interlacing band ornament.” Signs featured in the medallions include interpretations of Capricorn and Libra.
