Calla Lily Carved Fruitwood Wall Shelf

This French Art Nouveau carved fruitwood wall shelf features a central wall plaque decorated with intricate carvings of a stylized calla lily, from which two side shelves emerge, with a third shelf is found at its base. The central plaque features not only an incredible rendering of a beautiful flower, but also wonderful striation motifs broken into small vignettes, which, when taken as a whole, resemble the interior structure of a great, Gothic Cathedral. The composition is completed by two sinuous arms that reach from the base to the two upper shelves, uniting the piece as a whole.

The calla lily was endemic to the lakes of the Vosges, the mountain range of the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. The Vosges were of considerable inspiration to the artists of the École de Nancy, and the 18th century of the Hautes Vosges frequently attracted the school's botanical artists.
