Anthony Selmersheim Mahogany Fourteen-Drawer Desk
This mahogany desk, by Anthony Selmersheim, is a resolute and strong composition from the French Art Nouveau style. A trained architect and builder, this wooden piece of beauty and engineering has an industrial sense of construction, with its wonderful, heavy horizontality, softened by wonderful, sweeping curves and corners. The piece is complete with original bronze pulls on the fourteen separate drawers and a shelf that slides out from the desk's right side.

A trained and practicing architect, Anthony Selmersheim did not become a decorative artist until later in his career, after a negative review of one of his buildings praised the furniture crafted for its interior by Selmersheim, and suggested the artist turn to a career in the decorative arts instead, which he did to much acclaim.
